Choosing Trout Flies
Start with the fishing situation rather than a pattern name. Consider the water and conditions, the food trout are likely encountering, where the fish are positioned and the presentation required to reach them. Those decisions narrow whether a dry fly, nymph, streamer or other fly type makes sense before you choose the final profile, size and pattern.
There is no single “best trout fly” for every river, season or situation. If you're unsure what to tie on, use Trout Eddy's Trout Fly Patterns & Selection Guide to work from the fishing conditions to the fly instead of guessing from the box.
